Last Sunday morning, I took an unexpected 50-minute drive from NJ to Pennsylvania (using Google Maps, of course, & recommended when traveling) to Pennsbury Manor, the summer home of William Penn.
This place is at 400 Pennsbury Memorial Rd., Morrisville, PA. www.pennsburymanor.org. 26 miles northeast of the colonial capital of Philadelphia. The estate was established in 1683; Penn designed and laid out the plan for his manor, which also has a house, farm, seat of government, and a vibrant community. The estate deteriorated after his passing. The Manor was reconstructed between 1937 and 1942 by the PHC (Pennsylvania Historical Commission) based on Mr. Penn's original written instructions, archaeological excavations, and the research into period dwellings, landscapes, and furnishings known by Mr. Penn. The manor formally opened in 1939 as a memorial and teachings of Mr. Penn.
The visitors center has a mini museum to start your tour. Still, if you go to the front desk and do a guided tour inside the house with any staff who dress up in time-period clothing, you can pay adult admission, and if you are an AAA member, you get a discount admission. You can make reservations, but they are not recommended. You can purchase Ground passes for 3.00 to explore the grounds at your leisure; on Sundays, you just pay regular admission. There are also Actual living history Demonstrations from woodworking, gardening, quill pen making, cooking, brewing, blacksmithing, and farming. Warning: There is an active bee hive on site. If you or someone you know, like a friend or family member, is allergic to bees, bring the epi-pen prescribed by your doctor. There are also live animals, including Oxen, sheep, and horses, and you will occasionally see wild turkeys.
After a beautiful tour of the historic Pennsbury Manor, I drove back into Jersey for lunch, and I found this really quaint micro-brewery called Subculture Artisan Ales Brewery located at 11 W 2nd Street, Florence, NJ /https://subcultureartisanales.com/. This place has a beautiful selection of craft beers on tap, from light IPAs like Florence to dark stouts like Silos. You can sample them with their small flight glass on tap, except for Kinkora, served from the can. You can order food from nearby restaurants like Rocco's Italian pizzeria located at 312 W Front Street, Florence, which makes delicious wings like their honey-mustard garlic wings which go excellent with the Silo dark stout craft beer. Oh, and also try The Burton Reynolds English Burton Ale, named in honor of the late sexy actor Burt Reynolds (see the 1970s nude centerfold that all the women swooned over, and I was born the day that photo came out).
And so that was my peaceful Sunday adventure, and I hope to go on another adventure! Where will it be this time, in My home state or maybe PA? As they say in show biz, "Stay Tuned."
